City High’s French Club welcomes students interested in French culture, language, and movies. They meet after school on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. To celebrate Martin Luther King Jr., the club is showing a series of French movies revolving around social justice.

“Since January is the month of MLK, [we’ve] decided to show movies with the theme revolving [around] social justice issues,” Monsieur Balcaen, teacher sponsor of French Club said.

Martin Luther King Jr. was a minister and activist who became the most visible spokesman and leader in the American civil rights movement. His leadership was fundamental in ending legal segregation in the South and other places in the United States. Martin Luther King Day is observed every year on the third Monday of January.

“My favorite movie was La Marche because of how the characters were persistent and never gave up and also how they worked together in teams. They were really brave and I liked that.” said Nabi Emmanuel ‘23, who attends the French Club.

The French Club has currently watched the movies. “La Rafle” and “La Marche.” The movie that is being shown next Wednesday on February 2, is titled “Les Héritiers.” Based on a true story, the film chronicles the relationship of a teacher with teenagers who have long since dropped out of the school system. For January, movies are being shown on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 4:00 pm right after school, in room 3303. The French Club is welcome to everyone.
