Along with 15 other 4A jazz bands, City High Jazz Ensemble went to Ames, Iowa on April 2nd for the 2019 Iowa Jazz Championships. The IBA jazz band competed in Stephens Auditorium and played songs including “Carl” by Bill Holman, “Bluebird of Delhi” by Duke Ellington, and “Winds of the Gullah” by Paul McKee. After a day of performances by schools from across Iowa, they learned that the band earned a participation award

“We performed very well. We have improved as a group so much since last year and everyone put in a lot of work,” Maggie Cremers ’19 said. “We are disappointed of course but part of competing is understanding that you can’t predict how the judges will feel about your band or the others.”

Their work is not done yet though because they still have a performance for the Iowa Bandmasters Association May 8th through 11th, a very select and high honor for any high school jazz band in Iowa.
