The Little Hawk Debate team traveled to Cedar Rapids Washington high school this weekend, October 26-28, and returned to Iowa City with a 15-pound bust of George Washington. Debaters Kieran Green and Ava Vargason went 5-1 in the preliminary rounds, won double Octofinals, then Octofinals, and were eliminated in quarterfinals.
“We narrowly missed out on getting to Tournament of Champions,” Green said. “We were one ballot away.” The tournament of Champions, or TOC, is a national debate tournament, reeling in top debaters from across the country. The pair sees this bust as a manifestation of their accomplishment thus far, and hopes to continue achieving at this level.
“If we get to Octofinals this weekend, then we’ll be able to go to TOC,” Green said. The Debate team will travel to Ann Arbor, Michigan this weekend and will compete to be able to qualify for Nationals.
