Today is a big day for the girl’s basketball team. They will travel across the river to take on cross town rival, West High at six PM. With bragging rights at stake, the girls hope to prove they can compete with the top team in the state.
Coming into the game the 9-3 Little Hawks are the underdogs as the Women of Troy are 12-0 and ranked No. 1 in the state. West has generally had little trouble controlling other teams this season. They have an experienced team who will no doubt come prepared for Friday’s game.
West has three players consistently scoring in double digits, Ally Disterhoft, Tatum Klein, and Mckenzie Piper. Disterhoft has been the major threat for the Women of Troy scoring in double digits in every game this season. Her defense is a concern as well since she also leads the team in steals.
Stopping West’s potent offense (80.5 average points per game) will be one of the biggest keys to success for Friday’s game. Running an effective press will be a huge factor for a successful Little Hawk defense. For City a smooth running offense with emphasis on points in the paint is key as well. Converting free throws will be critical as missed opportunities from the line have hurt the team in several games.
In talking about City’s game plan, Haley Lorenzen ‘14 said, “We’re focusing on making our free throws and pounding it inside to get our offense going,”
Despite a few close, and disappointing losses this season, the Little Hawks are determined to come away on top Friday. Winning would give the team momentum as they move into the last half of their season as well as providing a boost to team morale.
“A win would give us a lot of confidence knowing we can beat a team like West,” Lorenzen said.
